  0. How (that is, by whom) did you join Red Bean, and approximately
when? Who in Red Bean knows you in real life, so we could ask
them if you suddenly appear to disappear?

I was invited (orginally as 'autumnwar') by Ben Collins-Sussman,
one of my Inso Corporation co-workers, sometime near the
end of the summer of 1999. In December of the same year, Ben
also created the 'cmpilato' account as an invitation for me
to personally become a part of this community, rather than
        just free-load a web host! :-)

  1. Do you use Red Bean as your primary email address and/or primary
Web server (i.e., is your home page here)?

"Yes" and "no, but soon." Yes, Red Bean has been responsible
for redirecting emails and httpd requests for all things
related to the Chicagoland rock band The Autumn War, of which
I am a member. No, none of those addresses would be matched
in a grep for "red-bean." But my primary email address will
now be distributed as a Red Bean account. I will still forward
mail to whatever current ISP I am hooked up with (until the
cooks decide to go global and knock AOL off the map, that is).

  2. Do you know anything about Unix system administration?
Programming? Tell everything about you and computers... :-)

I know a dangerously mediocre amount of Unix System
Administration, but am learning more daily under Ben's wing.
I am a thoroughly competent programmer, although watching Matt
Braithwaite turn my 30-line Perl script into a one-line shell
command makes me question that sometimes. I am employed as a
Software Engineer, where I spend my days churning out C code.
I am one of the few (elite? nah...) people in all the world
familiar with TopSpeed's Clarion database language/IDE.

"Mike Pilato and Computers" touches such areas as the design
        of websites and graphics (note the new Red Bean site logo);
digital audio and video recording and editing; toying
with Linux (which usually means apt-getting unstable debian
packages so Ben can see them without trashing his primary
        work machine).

  3. Anything else about yourself you'd like made known? Put it here,
     anything goes.

I play guitar and sing backup vocals for the aforementioned
rock band The Autumn War (see http://www.autumnwar.com). I
have a wonderful wife named Amy. Unlike Ben, I'm not an
aspiring yuppie. Oh, and I'm a sucker for Karl's sense of
humor. I get a kick out of listening to debates on what
"free" really means, on the pitfalls of cathedral-style
project implementation, and on whether or not case sensitivity
in an OS is a benefit or a hindrance. I love being a
        suburbanite.

  4. Optional information: what's your snail address and phone, in
case something goes down and we need to reach you that way?
(This information will not be published on the Web unless you
     specifically grant permission.)

        [not public]

  5. Do you play bagpipes?

        Only via MIDI patches.
